On Monday Savannah and I were treated to a showing of the Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's picture book Room on the Broom theatre production at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford. The show starts of with a group of friends camping in the woods and follows the story of A witch on her travels where she breaks her broom and meets lots of fab characters along the way. The witch ends up fighting off a dragon (not too scary for the children) at the end as he wants to eat her for his tea with chips. Savannah is 3 years old and I think this was a fab production for her age and younger. I found that she loved all of the songs and characters especially the fabulous dog .The dog was a puppet managed by a actor, but you really did not notice the actor as he managed the puppet so well. The other puppet she loved was the the cheeky and a little rude (burping)country singing frog.
The set is really cool and I love the way they have used broom sticks for the branches in the trees which is a really cute idea and gets the kids imagination going. The lighting could do with being a little brighter as I can imagine its a little scary for some of the little ones. Savannah wasn't scared as she knows the book so well and I had prepared her about the witch maybe being scary, but she really wasn't. The songs are catchy and we even got to join in with the actors at some points.
